Two Typical Papuan Foods will Go Public

Initially Yam (ubi jalar or petatas or ipomoea batatas poir) and Taro (keladi or kastela) are typical foods for Papuan countryside. Recently, Directress of Honai Foundation in Timika Ms Anastasia Takage, SA.g has developed those two staple foods to be high value cuisine, as saying on Wednesday, February 13, 2008.
Due to Papuan origin as well as Papuan Council member, Ms Anastasia is felt on to develop two kinds of crops into high quality of typical Indonesia cuisine presented in all big or small functions in Papua. “The modern life has influenced Papua community especially who living in the countryside to forget their origin and typical foods bequeathed from their ancestors."Honai Foundation sees this very interesting phenomenon, so we will have cultivation program with the good seed-bed handling to make high quality food as well as contain high nutritive value, “said Ms Anastasia who also the Chairman for Dewan Kehormatan DPRD of Kabupaten Mimika. To cultivate the two crops, the Honai Foundation cooperate with several village heads in several Satuan Pemukiman/ housing-units (SP). The village heads gave 3 hectares land, afterwards young mother groups will manage this land as a sample garden. Through this sample garden, in the future it will be born petatas and taros farmers who routinely produce petatas and taros in big quantities. All harvests produced will be bought by the Honai Foundation that furthermore will be marketed outside Timika. To support this program, Tepung Tapioka Factory will also be built in Nabire soon.. If this plan is realized in the years ahead, they will need big quantity taros, petatas, cassavas in stocks or supplies from any where. Hopefully in the near future, Petatas and Taros indeed not only become typical food of Papuan community that have high nutritive, protein, and mineral contents, but furnish the typical Indonesian cuisines as well.
